Dear Reader,
I remember the first time I read Paper Towns by John Green was in English class. We listened to it on audio tapes but didn’t get all the way to the end. Eager to finish it, I went to the library to pick up the book. The ending fascinated me in a way that no other author as accomplished. As someone who has always had the dream to become an author, I realized that I wanted to write novels the same way that John does. His endings aren’t the cookie-cutter, happily-ever-after type. They’re real. And that was something that I couldn’t help but appreciate. Quickly, I read his other books, which included Looking For Alaska, The Fault In Our Stars, and An Abundance of Katherines. John Green became my favorite author and role model for what I want to write in a book.
Multi-Genre Research projects need to be done on people that you already have some background knowledge on or else you won’t be as passionate about the project. Also, you need to find someone who has done something memorable with their life and someone who inspires you to become a better person as well. This person needs to have achieved the American Dream. You also have to share similarities with the person that you choose as your topic.
I chose to do my Multi-Genre Research project on John Green because he fits into the American Dream by being determined to become an author. He didn’t give up on his dreams, no matter how ridiculous they seemed. He also tried to incorporate himself into every novel he wrote, making them as genuine as possible. His dream was to be an author who created stories that were realistic. Now, as a published author, he has achieved the American Dream.
John Green has many important quotes throughout all of his novels, which I have chosen to use as transitions throughout my project. I decided to find quotes in his book and use them to create an important structure in my project. One of the major similarities between John and I is the desire to write a novel has been present at a young age. I chose to connect our early life stories to create a connection between John and I.
In my project, I will start by talking about John’s childhood, then transition to his life as an early author and the publication of his first novel. I will talk about John’s novels and how they’ve had an impact on my life as well as the lives of others. I will also talk about the creation and history of Vlogbrothers, which is a YouTube channel ran by John and his brother, Hank.
I chose to use various modes of writing for my project, such as poems and interviews. These pieces will reveal things from John’s childhood, as well as his journey to become an author. I will compare his life experience as a writer to my dream to become an author. John Green’s American Dream has always been to become an author, and he had to work hard to get there. I hope you enjoy reading his story as much as I did.
Sincerely,
Sydney Hirschkorn
