Thomas Edison’s last words were ‘It’s very beautiful over there.’ I don’t know where there is, but I believe it’s somewhere, and I hope it’s beautiful.” -Looking for Alaska pg. 221.
This quote relates to the next genre because it reminds me of Esther Earl, who is a nerdfighter that died a few years ago at the age of sixteen. John knew her very well, so her death affected him personally. After her death, John used her story and how she touched his life to write his latest novel, The Fault In Our Stars. The main character, Hazel, is very similar to Esther, but the story isn’t based solely off of Esther’s life.
Character Analysis
Hazel Grace Lancaster
Hazel Grace Lancaster is the main character in the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. She is sixteen years old and is dying from lungs that don’t function properly. However, she still manages to have an interesting perspective on the world. The book tells her story and how she comes to meet Augustus Waters, and how her life changes with him.
Hazel Grace is loosely based off of Esther Earl, a sixteen year old girl that John Green knew personally. She was a nerdfighter, and she also had her own YouTube channels called “crazycrayon” and “cookie4monster4”. Esther died due to lung problems on August 25, 2010, and inspired Green to write a book about disease. Esther and Hazel are very similar, and while the book may be dedicated to Esther, The Fault in Our Stars isn’t just directly Esther’s story. The Fault in Our Stars gives people a perspective on disease and the effects it can have. To this day, John wonders every day if Esther would like the book, but unfortunately, he will never know.
